Cooking Conversion Charts

Go to the cooking conversion charts comments page

These conversions are handy to know around the kitchen - especially when you do not want to dirty up additional measuring containers. Note the conversion of volume to weight (such as 1 cup = 8 oz) is approximate because 1 cup of iron weighs more than 1 cup of flour.

Tablespoon Conversion

Oddly enough, even the tablespoon is not a consistent measurement around the world.

Nationality Tablespoon
American 14.2 ml
British 17.7 ml
Canadian 15 ml
Australian 20 ml

American pint: 16 fluid ounces
Imperial pint: 20 fluid ounces

Always remember to double check your recipe. There is a big difference between fluid ounces which is a volume measurement and dry ounces which is a weight measurement.

Liquid and Volume Measures

The liquid measures are approximate because liquids can weigh differently. For example, 1 cup water weighs less than 1 cup of lead; an extreme example but poignant.
