Homemade Applesauce
Applesauce that tastes much better than store bought.
Ingredients
- Apples, sweet and neutral. Try Red Delicous, Rome, Gala, Fuji
- Cinnamon, 1 tsp per 10 apples
- Salt, 1/4 tsp per 10 apples
- Sugar, to taste (optional)
Equipment
- Potato masher
- Large pot with lid
Directions
Wash, core and peel the apples.
Slice into 8 sections then toss in large pot.
Fill with water until it covers apples by at least 1 inch.
Boil then cover and simmer for 15 minutes. Apples should be very
mushy.
Drain, put in another bowl, mash with potato masher.
Mix in cinnamon and sugar, if necessary.
Serve cold. Will store in refrigerator for a week or so.
Doug's Notes
I found mixing sweet apples, such as red delicious, and neutral
apples works best. You probably won't need sugar. Applesauce is great
for canning. The salt helps preserve color and enhances the taste.
